Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in a patient with dextrocardia situs inversus

Background: Dextrocardia is a congenital anomaly, which may have coexistent coronary artery disease (CAD), arrhythmias and conventional indications for device therapy. However, the implantation of transvenous leads can be technically challenging and the approach needs to be tailored to the patient's individual anatomy. Case presentation: A 54-year-old male with dextrocardia situs inversus and i...

Managing cross talk between a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and a dual-chamber unipolar pacemaker system

Introduction In cases of patients who have contraindications to transvenous pacing leads but still require pacing, surgically placed epicardial pacing leads are often used. If such a patient warranted implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) system would be ideal from the standpoint of avoidance of transvenous leads, but devicedevice interaction with the epicardi...

Changing place, changing future: Repositioning a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator can resolve inappropriate shocks secondary to myopotential oversensing

Introduction The clinical benefits of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy have been widely documented in clinical studies of selected patient populations. Subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) is a valid alternative to transvenous ICDinpatientswhodonot require cardiac resynchronization or antibradycardia or antitachycardia pacing, and has the additional advantage of avoiding possible acute ...

Initial experience with the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in a single Japanese center

BACKGROUND The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) is recognized as a viable alternative to the transvenous ICD. The safety and efficacy of this device has been demonstrated in Western countries, but studies with S-ICD implantation in Japanese patients have not been reported. METHODS AND RESULTS Twelve patients received an S-ICD implant in our institute between Februar...

Totally submuscular implantation of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator: a safe and effective solution for obese or oversized patients

The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) is a safe alternative to transvenous ICD. We describe a submuscular S-ICD placement technique in a severely obese with an oversized chest. Submuscular configuration allows optimal system positioning and impendence values warranting a safe and effective shock transmission. This technique is safe and improves patients comfort.
